Summary:
Learn how All Purpose Staffing helped site managers at one of the nation’s largest environmental services companies solve the problem of high turnover rates for trash throwers (the industry average is 200%) and reduce associated costs.
Challenge:
The biggest challenge affecting environmental services is the high turnover rate of trash throwers, the men and women who ride the back of garbage trucks. Without them, the cleanliness of our neighborhoods would not exist. With turnover rates of 200%, the costs of increased overtime to cover for absent employees and the constant retraining of new personnel drag down the profitability of this essential service. This is especially problematic during the summer months in the South, where several sites we serve in Florida experienced this issue.Recommendations:
Knowing the importance of this role, we designed a program that emphasized the significance of the job to the community as part of the onboarding process. Our employees understood the importance of notifying us and route managers if they couldn’t work, treating the job with the same respect as permanent employees. With our client’s help, we started to see the site’s crew out every morning, allowing us to reach out to any absent employees who hadn’t called in. This approach helped reinforce our program and identify employees who were not a good long-term fit for the role.

We created a reliable workforce, achieving retention rates of 80%, a significant improvement from the industry turnover rate of 200%. The program’s success was evidenced by the number of new employees referred by current employees. This success reaffirms our commitment to knowing and investing in our employees as the foundation for successful placements and positive experiences for both our employees and clients.
